New HQ for United Way Central Indiana

New HQ for United Way Central Indiana

This was a transformative project for this key organization - for its staff, volunteers, donors and agencies. While leading at Rowland Design, we came up with the big ideas on how to align a new workplace to the new strategies for United Way. The after effects? All around incredible and award winning.

We spent 5 years watching the tech and financial giants pilot alternative workplace strategies before jumping into solve our own problems. In the end, we leapfrogged them creating a set of 24 metrics tying workplace design to performance. I along with my partners at DEGW were published in Harvard Business Review in 2009 with this story of success - the first of a multi national corporation to do such a thing.

I've since helped several other Fortune 200 companies follow the same process and journey - and have facilitated and introduced many other leaders and companies to the construct as well.

This is the ground level hang out and heart and soul of the mothership for the global pharma based in Indianapolis. As Chief Architect for Lilly, I created the name, the concept, the program and worked with our partner design firms at Axis Architects and Designvox to deliver the final product which is beyond the sum of its parts.

The concept of creating a social place for collaboration - a place where people feel welcome and attracted to the reason why they work so hard - died 3 times before the CEO built a shadow team of 12 people together to work on wicked problems. The REV team, of which I was one, sponsored the "genuine pub" experience for the 4th time and it stuck.

Today, its hard to find a place to sit.

With my co-authors David Craig and Andrew Laing, we published the first ever connection between workplace performance and design for a multi-national company based upon 23 measures. These ultimately were endorsed by the C-Suite as Policy and rolled out around the world. This not only spun off business solutions such as design and change management, it helped kick start and introduce alternative work strategies for a number of local, regional and global companies.

At the base of the old chemistry lab, we repurposed the plan to allow for informal reading, discussion and meeting along with eating, drinking and socialization amongst aspects of the scientific collection. Along primary circulation, we developed visual story telling panels to network and catalogue how the Lilly Research Labs over time made some of its most important discoveries commercial. This project included many collaborative design partners including Axis Architects, Designvox and TLF.

Irwin Union Bank

Irwin Union Bank

We restored the Saarinen designed glass bank, a National Historic Landmark, with white gloves. I led the team as Director of Architecture for Cummins. In the 1950s, the CEO of Cummins, J. Irwin Miller hired Eero to think outside the box for a new way to address the banking customer experience.

Fast forward to 2014, post economic crash, the bank had lost its business and we repurposed the facility after acquiring it out of bankruptcy into a center hub for the City and business.

Dressed in all white, and with many of the original designers from Eero's company and friends, I designed the restoration with our design partners at Todd Wiliams, Axis Architecture, Venn Integration and Exhibitz.

As Director of Architecture for Cummins, I led the team and business to develop the research, program and reinvestment into a redesign for the Seymour Tech Center. The project included the new addition of an product engineering center to collocate all of the USA engineering into one location. Teams ranged in product maturity, size and complexity and the facility has to flex along with the product development lifecycle. The award winning sustainable facility was designed to Cummins' new Architectural Design Principles. Our design partners included MNA and CSO Architects.

For me, a workplace architect who puts Kevin Roche on a pedestal, working within the IOB Office addition was like working on a Ferrari. We took great care with this National Historic Landmark to not diminish the original character - yet do the things we needed to do to make it work for the new business unit.

Design partners included Todd Williams, KRJDA, Axis Architects and HOK Houston.

Working within the constraints of the Kevin Roche Addition to Irwin Union Bank, a National Historic Landmark, we redesigned the lobby to become the front door to the new business unit that moved into the office. This project was completed while I was Director of Architecture for Cummins and designed with partners at KRJDA, HOK, Todd Williams and Axis Architects.

Taking over the Cesar Pelli anchor store, Sears Inc. sold and closed and we had a window to convert the space on quick order for teams that needed a quality space. I worked with design partners at Force Design Build on this project.

Chongqing China

Chongqing China

The yellow brick road... designing new manufacturing in the new technology ring outside CQ China. We worked with the private-government JV to relocate a 50 year engine company out of the heart of a growing city to a challenging site. Nothing like working shoulder to shoulder with the Big Boss 14 hours upside down! This is where design ideas need to really resonate when language, cultures and timezones are all counter productive to one's comfort zone... and some of the most rewarding as a result.

St. Richards School Library

Using Business Model Generation as a design process, we collectively solved how to work within the constraints of the existing footprint while changing the way the school and library joined Indianapolis Public Library collections and additional extra curricular groups including morning coffee for parents. This in turn created a multi-segment customer base and value proposition which drove flexibility as one of the many new design solutions.

Now some will rightly point to the relocation - but we believe the design collaboration with this client paid dividends too.

Blue Ridge Road, Suburban Indianapolis

Blue Ridge Road, Suburban Indianapolis

In 1921, the Peter Blue farm orchard was home to something new, a subdivision. Two families later and 75 years of four generations of love it became THTA's. We started our own bundles of life here for 18 years. These old photos capture such frozen moments of progress that is hard to frame in today's context of global population, communications and connectedness. This house btw was designed by the Architect of Indianapolis at the time, Frank Hunter.
